Opening Hours

Knowing the opening times for The Real Mary King’s Close is essential for building your Edinburgh itinerary. Because the attraction is located deep underground and tours run on a strict schedule, entry is only possible via a pre-booked time slot.

Standard Opening Times

Mary King’s Close is open 7 days a week, excluding Christmas Day (December 25th).

Seasonal Shifts & Special Events

Edinburgh’s schedule changes drastically depending on the time of year. Mary King’s Close adapts its hours to match:

  • The August Fringe Festival: The attraction often extends hours until nearly midnight to accommodate the massive influx of tourists. Note: Allow an extra 20 minutes just to navigate the crowds on the street to reach the entrance on time.
  • The Christmas & Hogmanay Period: Aside from being closed on Christmas Day, the site remains open throughout the holidays. However, hours are often reduced on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (closing around 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM).
  • Winter Maintenance: Occasionally, mid-week tours in January or February may start later (around 10:30 AM) to allow for preservation checks.

Logistical Tip: The Cockburn Street Factor

When planning your arrival time, consider the “Edinburgh Hill Factor.” If you are coming from Waverley Station or Princes Street, do not trust Google Maps’ 5-minute estimate.

The walk up the steep, winding Cockburn Street or the many “Closes” (historic stone stairs) is a significant incline that can take 10–15 minutes if you aren’t a seasoned hiker.

  • Strategy: Aim to be at the top of the hill 20 minutes before your slot. This gives you time to find the entrance at 2 Warriston’s Close without breaking a sweat or rushing.

Can you wait inside?

If you arrive early for your time slot, you can wait in the covered reception area or the gift shop.

The site is climate-controlled underground (cool and dry), making the reception area a great place to escape Edinburgh’s frequent rain while you wait for your guide to call your group.

  • Pro Tip: Use this time to use the facilities; there are no toilets once the tour begins. The tour lasts 60 minutes and once you descend, you cannot easily return to the surface until the tour concludes.

The Café Hours

The Royal Exchange Café located on-site usually opens 30 minutes before the first tour and closes 30 minutes after the last tour departs. It is an excellent spot for a “buffer” coffee if you arrived early to beat the Cockburn Street hill climb.

How long does the visit take?

The guided tour itself lasts approximately 60 minutes. However, to ensure a smooth experience, you should plan for a 90-minute window:

  • 15 Mins Before: Arrival and check-in at the Royal Mile entrance.
  • 60 Mins: The fully guided underground experience.
  • 15 Mins After: Time to browse the gift shop or visit the on-site café.

Best Time to Visit to Avoid Crowds

Since group sizes are always limited to approximately 20 people, the “crowd” inside the Close is always the same. However, the street noise and Royal Mile crowds vary:

  • Early Bird (Before 10:30 AM): The best time if you want a quiet start to your day and easier access to the entrance.
  • Late Night (After 8:00 PM): Best for those seeking the maximum “atmospheric” experience without the daytime street noise.

Time-Based Planning

  • For Families: The 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM slots are best. The guides are fresh, and the energy is high.
  • For History Buffs: The mid-afternoon slots (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM) allow you to pair the visit with a morning at Edinburgh Castle and a late afternoon at the Museum of Edinburgh.
  • For Atmosphere Seekers: Any slot after 7:00 PM. The transition from the dark underground back to the dark Royal Mile keeps the “immersion” alive much longer.
